The Institute of Education and Media Services at Manchester Metropolitan University in Partnership with Promethean have established "The Promethean Centre of Excellence" which is located in the Birley Building on the Didsbury Campus.

The Centre has been established to demonstrate and promote the highest quality of learning, teaching and training at all levels through the innovation, development and effective use of learning technologies.

About the Institute

The Institute is the major provider of initial teacher education and continuing professional development for teachers at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the North West, and is one of the largest teacher training establishments in the country.

The Promethean Centre's main objective is to promote the application of this digital technology in the development and enhancement of learning opportunities and teaching strategies to help raise educational standards for future generations, positively influencing the quality of society.

The Partners have agreed that the Centre will:

  • Support the development of learning resources for teachers/tutors at all levels
  • Help faculties and departments in MMU develop learning and teaching skills in line with MMU's Learning and Teaching Strategic Plan
  • Provide the location to use, test, evaluate and modify Promethean products, equipment and software
  • Develop training programmes in the effective use of learning technologies in HE and schools/colleges and construct short courses leading to University qualifications
  • Encourage and support research activities and projects in the area of learning and learning technology
  • Engage in research and publication in a pedagogy related to learning technologies
  • Construct developmental projects (seeking and acquiring external funding)
  • Seek to build networks in higher education with those involved in learning technologies innovation and development
  • Provide for the demonstration and dissemination of good practice
  • Organise conferences to promote the effective use of learning technologies and contribute to conference programmes 
  • Develop a database identifying good practice/practitioners/demonstration lessons etc
  • Liaise with a wide variety of client groups locally, nationally and internationally
